Narrative:
Assigned ruudy two departure [from] teb runway 24. Crew briefed the departure and reviewed all altitudes. Altitude restrictions were verified in the FMS. Altitude selector was set to 2;000 ft. Departure was flown on the FMS with the flight director. On departure the captain called for flight level change (flch). This is what allowed for the altitude deviation. The call should have been for vertical navigation (VNAV). This mode would have honored the 1;500 ft restriction at wentz. Controller asked pilot to stop climb and return to 1;500 ft. This was done quickly and there were no traffic conflicts. Deviation was 300 ft. The incorrect flight mode was noted by both pilots. While [in flight training] I will retrain on usage on mode selection for sids and stars.

Title: A crew set 2;000 FT in the MCP altitude set window before takeoff on the TEB RUUDY Two RNAV and then selected flight level change when airborne; which allowed the aircraft to overshoot the 1;500 FT WENTZ restriction. ATC directed a descent.
