Narrative:
I'm writing this report due to a fatigue call I made. I was on a two day trip that was delayed a bit on day one. The trip had a scheduled overnight of 8 hours and 23 minutes. However; due to delays we were running late and wound up getting in about 47 minutes late. This resulted in a reduced rest overnight of exactly 8 hours. The first 45 minutes of the overnight were spent walking through the terminal; waiting for the hotel shuttle and checking into our hotel. In the morning; we left the hotel 24 minutes before our report. We then got to the airport and did our morning checks. We left and flew to ZZZ where we sat for around 3 hours before doing an out and back. After the turn; we were scheduled to sit for an hour and do another turn. This turn was delayed due to a mechanical. The delay was initially 2 hours and kept getting pushed back. The plane we were to take had to do a turn first and hadn't yet left. We waited and asked about a possible swap to another aircraft but; none were available. I tried holding out but was exhausted from the short amount of sleep I received last night. I called in fatigued. I hated to do it but if I didn't I would have been on duty for almost 16 hours after 5 hours and 45 minutes of sleep while doing new hire initial operating experience. I didn't feel that would be safe as I was already exhausted an hour and a half before I was to leave for the next turn.
