Narrative:

The engine quit on a two mile right base. [I] immediately slowed to best glide speed (80 mph); tried switching tanks; enriching mixture; pumping primer and throttle. The engine failed to restart. Attempted to make a 45 degree upwind entry and land on the runway; however it was soon evident that this was not possible. I then made an emergency landing immediately to the west of the runway in an open field. The aircraft was slowed as much as possible. The terrain was fairly rough and I did hit a small ditch. The engine restarted as soon as the aircraft was on the ground and I was able to taxi back to the hanger. There was a minor prop strike I assume when crossing the ditch. One of the prop blades was bent back approximately two inches at the tip and there was a quarter inch nick near the tip on another blade.
