Preflight safety check discovered a latch broke and came off of overhead compartment at row 20 def that housed safety equipment. Mechanic was called and boarded. Mechanic taped bin shut with emergency equipment still housed in the bin.

Title: The latch for an overhead [compartment] was broken so a Mechanic taped bin closed even though it contained emergency equipment.
Narrative: Preflight safety check discovered a latch broke and came off of overhead compartment at Row 20 DEF that housed safety equipment. Mechanic was called and boarded. Mechanic taped bin shut with emergency equipment still housed in the bin.
