Narrative:
On oct/mon/1988 I looked at my medical and discovered that is was expired. I turned down a flight that had been scheduled to me. I went home, called the chief pilot, director of operations at their home and told them that I couldn't fly that night because of my expired medical. I went in to get a current medical the next day. I went to talk to the director of operations and told him I was the one who had found out about it. In september of 1988 I was to get a new medical but was sent to bethel, ak to fly for 2 weeks and when I had gotten back I found a notice of medical in my box at work. It was supposed to be done by the XXXX of the month and if late I had to have the director of operation sign so he did and I put it back into my box when I got back and had him sign. I put it in my box and I was scheduled to attend recurrent training the first week in oct so I had about 5 days off in a row. I got back to work and had about 16 pages of other paper work in my box and didn't dig through and forgot to get my medical. I am now on 2 week leave without pay for this ordeal. The director of operations asked me who I had called. I had called him the chief pilot and the company attorney about this. He asked if I had told the FAA. I said no. I told him I could of probably kept quiet and went to get my medical without saying anything but I was too honest to do that. He told me not to go to the FAA, and didn't want me to fill out this form, I put the company attorney advised me to fill this out and send it in. I already admitted it is my fault to the company for letting the medical to expire. I talked to other captains and coplts in the company and they said I was given too harsh of punishment. The director of operations said I embarrassed him and made him look stupid. I feel it is my fault and the company's training department's fault because they should not have let me fly 1 day without a current medical. I will never let my medical expire again after this lesson.
