Narrative:
On our descent; the first officer notified me he just saw the smoke warning light flicker. At that moment we ran the memory item and checklist. Then I notified approach we had a smoke indication light come on and we were declaring an emergency. I then called the flight attendant in the cabin and asked if she could check for any signs of smoke in the cabin or baggage compartment. After a minute or so she called back stating there were no signs of smoke. Then I called dispatch and notified them we had a declared emergency and we would be landing soon. We flew the ILS and landed and proceeded to the gate. Once the door was opened; I went outside and watched the firefighters check the baggage compartment and gave them the flight information. From what I recall from the logbook; the smoke detector light had illuminated a couple days prior and may have been a reoccurring issue.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DHC-8-300 crew experienced a momentary baggage smoke warning during descent. An emergency was declared and the flight lands at the destination airport. The logbook indicated a previous write-up for a false smoke warning.
