Narrative:
We had a deferred first officer clip board holder that was duct taped to the sliding window and frame. En route we realized that the new evacuation SOP has the first officer reading and doing the procedure. The first officer could not read from the right because the duct tape covered the checklist and the first officer could not see to read the checklist on the captain's clipboard. Maintenance was contacted and asked if the MEL allowed the checklist to be covered with duct tape. The answer was unclear. We devised an alternate procedure and made an ACARS frm entry for the covered checklist.
