Narrative:

We were cleared to 5;000 ft. I was hand flying the aircraft. In the climb; departure said; 'maintain 250 KTS through 10;000 ft.' I thought he said we were cleared to 10;000 ft; so I initiated the climb to 10;000 ft. The captain called to verify we were cleared to 10;000 ft. Departure said; 'negative; maintain 5;000 ft.' the aircraft reached an altitude of 5;500 ft. We descended down to 5;000 ft and continued the flight without further incident.I was busy hand-flying the aircraft. I misunderstood 'maintain 250 KTS through 10;000 ft' for being cleared to 10;000 ft. I should have verified the altitude prior to initiating the climb.
