Narrative:

On landing gear retraction; the nose gear red in transit [light] remained illuminated. Per QRH; the gear was cycled and the problem remained. The blue transfer lockout and standby on pressurization lights illuminated. The crew leveled at 10;000 ft to assess the problems. On being unable to reach the company at that altitude and having a stabilized cabin; the crew climbed to FL190. The captain was able to confer with dispatch and maintenance control. Maintenance had the crew lower the landing gear as a test. The down indications were normal; so the gear was left down. They directed the crew to proceed to the takeoff alternate. The first officer initially informed the flight attendants and passengers. The captain followed up with more information later. The subsequent landing was uneventful. This was the first revenue flight after heavy maintenance.
