Narrative:

At cruise altitude; I noticed oil decreasing. It ended at zero quantity. Monitored engine until we noticed a drop and marked fluctuation in oil pressure. Decision made to shut engine down. Declared emergency; and diverted. Accomplished appropriate checklists along the way. First officer made an outstanding single engine landing. Lead flight attendant was given an emergency briefing; and she and her crew did an excellent job with the passengers. Dispatch was notified of our intentions. Landing uneventful. Maintenance determined engine had lost 18 quarts of oil due to a leak.
