Narrative:
We were approximately 20 miles south of lga at 8;000 ft on the gatby 1 arrival when ATC advised us of a descending target which appeared to be within close proximity to our aircraft. After the initial advisory; ATC assigned a new heading to avoid the target. Within a few seconds of this new heading we received a TCAS message which required a climb of 2;000 ft/minute to avoid the conflict. Once clear of the conflict we informed ATC of our evasive maneuver. ATC then provided a new heading and also a descent to rejoin the arrival into lga. The remainder of the flight was uneventful.
