Narrative:
[We had an] EICAS le slat disagree message. On downwind for an approach to 08 we selected flaps 1. Midway through the extension we got an EICAS message 'le slat disagree' with associated light. We declared an emergency; requested airport rescue and fire fighting (arff) ran the QRH checklist and [alerted] the flight attendants. We landed flaps 20 which was uneventful.
