Narrative:
At top of descent the left engine hydraulic pump light came on. Accomplished the checklist. Then noticed left system hydraulic fluid decreasing so turned off left electric pump to save fluid. Declared an emergency at that time. Reviewed alternate flaps and gear extension checklists. Landing flaps and gear extension normal with electric pump. Lost nose steering after exiting runway; towed to gate.

Title: A B757 left engine hydraulic pump low pressure light illuminated so the pump was turned OFF and because the fluid continued decreasing the electric pump was also turned off to conserve fluid for gear and flap extension. An emergency was declared.
