When the left generator drive malfunctioned the flight crew of a B757-200 disconnected the generator; started the APU; brought its generator on-line and proceeded to their destination.

Narrative:
A gen drive caution EICAS message resulted in the of the left engine generator. We accomplished the QRH procedure; declared an emergency and coordinated a return to our departure airport. We then started and brought on-line the APU generator and full electrical power was restored. After conferring with dispatch and maintenance control we elected to continue to our destination and canceled the emergency with ATC.
