Narrative:
Complex special use airspace not understood by FSS personnel. When filing a VFR flight plan from fmn to las, asked briefer for latest information on grand canyon special flight rules area. Briefer did not have knowledge of sfar-50-2. This resulted in difficult preflight planning to negotiate corridors. Problem: altimeter settings not available from grand canyon at night 12/88. This caused difficulty in complying with sfar-50-2 which specifies exact altitudes for compliance east of mt dellenbaugh. FSS (prescott) said gcn altitude setting is unavailable. Problem: sfar-50-2 inset in las sectional is overly complex causing difficulty for non local pilots. Needs simplification. Pilot was unable to obtain latest (or any) information on sfar-50-2 from FSS personnel while filing a VFR flight plan in farmington, NM. Sfar-50-2 inset in las sectional is overly complex and difficult for non local pilots. Sfar-50-2 requires gcn altimeter settings, but gcn altimeter unavailable from prescott FSS while en route 12/88. The factors cited above make compliance with sfar-50-2 very difficult for non local pilots.

Title: GA PLT COMPLAINT ABOUT SFAR-50-2.
Narrative: COMPLEX SPECIAL USE AIRSPACE NOT UNDERSTOOD BY FSS PERSONNEL. WHEN FILING A VFR FLT PLAN FROM FMN TO LAS, ASKED BRIEFER FOR LATEST INFO ON GRAND CANYON SPECIAL FLT RULES AREA. BRIEFER DID NOT HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF SFAR-50-2. THIS RESULTED IN DIFFICULT PREFLT PLANNING TO NEGOTIATE CORRIDORS. PROB: ALTIMETER SETTINGS NOT AVAILABLE FROM GRAND CANYON AT NIGHT 12/88. THIS CAUSED DIFFICULTY IN COMPLYING WITH SFAR-50-2 WHICH SPECIFIES EXACT ALTS FOR COMPLIANCE E OF MT DELLENBAUGH. FSS (PRESCOTT) SAID GCN ALT SETTING IS UNAVAILABLE. PROB: SFAR-50-2 INSET IN LAS SECTIONAL IS OVERLY COMPLEX CAUSING DIFFICULTY FOR NON LCL PLTS. NEEDS SIMPLIFICATION. PLT WAS UNABLE TO OBTAIN LATEST (OR ANY) INFO ON SFAR-50-2 FROM FSS PERSONNEL WHILE FILING A VFR FLT PLAN IN FARMINGTON, NM. SFAR-50-2 INSET IN LAS SECTIONAL IS OVERLY COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT FOR NON LCL PLTS. SFAR-50-2 REQUIRES GCN ALTIMETER SETTINGS, BUT GCN ALTIMETER UNAVAILABLE FROM PRESCOTT FSS WHILE ENRTE 12/88. THE FACTORS CITED ABOVE MAKE COMPLIANCE WITH SFAR-50-2 VERY DIFFICULT FOR NON LCL PLTS.
