Narrative:
I received a WX briefing on 1/thu/89 at XA00 am local time for XB00 takeoff and filed for flight plan at that time. I reported in to fayetteville FSS at approximately XB30 that I was airborne at 2500' as I had filed. I followed razorback VOR towards mc alister and when it went off I tuned in the mc alister VOR. I attempted to follow the VOR but it became erratic and I began looking for ground reference points along the way. I saw lake eufaula and route 69 which passes over some of the lake. Before I could reach the bridge, however, I noted severe storm activity in my path. I turned away from the activity and headed south. When I felt I was around this storm cell I turned back to where I had seen route 69, but also noted more storm cells all around me with fog and rain. The rain worsened and became ice. There was a buildup on my windshield and leading wing edges. Fog became worse. I turned 180 degrees and attempted to return from whence I came, but became disoriented and lost. I called mc alister FSS and they gave me a frequency, but I could raise no one on it. Sleeting snow and ice and rain were building up on my aircraft and I dialed in 121.5 and squawked 7700 for emergency service, which I am thankful to god they provided. I was able to land safely with their help.
