Narrative:

A visual behind an aircraft to cross van nuys for 3000' or above at 3200' approach issued me a traffic conflict alert, cancelled my approach clearance and told me to climb to 3500' as I had traffic at 10 O'clock 2 mi at 3000' and climbing. I immediately applied power and climbed. At 3400' I observed traffic passing underneath. WX was too good, as the amount of ground lights plus the large number of planes in the air around burbank made it almost impossible to keep track of all aircraft. We were also busy with landing procedures and following our assigned aircraft. On the ground approach control said it was their mistake, but a number of my passenger felt the abrupt aircraft movements and saw the other aircraft go by. They were not impressed and neither was I.

Title: MLG CLEARED FOR VISUAL, ADVISED TO CLIMB TO AVOID ONCOMING ACFT. LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.

Narrative: A VISUAL BEHIND AN ACFT TO CROSS VAN NUYS FOR 3000' OR ABOVE AT 3200' APCH ISSUED ME A TFC CONFLICT ALERT, CANCELLED MY APCH CLRNC AND TOLD ME TO CLIMB TO 3500' AS I HAD TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK 2 MI AT 3000' AND CLIMBING. I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED POWER AND CLIMBED. AT 3400' I OBSERVED TFC PASSING UNDERNEATH. WX WAS TOO GOOD, AS THE AMOUNT OF GND LIGHTS PLUS THE LARGE NUMBER OF PLANES IN THE AIR AROUND BURBANK MADE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL ACFT. WE WERE ALSO BUSY WITH LNDG PROCEDURES AND FOLLOWING OUR ASSIGNED ACFT. ON THE GND APCH CTL SAID IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE, BUT A NUMBER OF MY PAX FELT THE ABRUPT ACFT MOVEMENTS AND SAW THE OTHER ACFT GO BY. THEY WERE NOT IMPRESSED AND NEITHER WAS I.
