Narrative:
At FL290 the top of a thunderstorm was building in front of us. We requested FL330, which was our optimum cruise altitude, anyway. The controller advised us of traffic at FL310 near jan. We entered the top of the thunderstorm and immediately requested an off course vector to climb to FL330. We were given a turn to 150 degree and cleared to FL330. The controller wanted us level in 3 min. At 32800' MSL the aircraft would not climb any further nor maintain that altitude, therefore a vector for descent was requested and obtained. We were cleared to FL310 and then requested to descend to FL290. The controller was heard vectoring the other aircraft away to prevent conflict. Flight was resumed at FL290 and we were cleared direct to jan and flight plan route.

Title: MLG UNABLE TO REACH ASSIGNED ALT, CAUSES POSSIBLE LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.
Narrative: AT FL290 THE TOP OF A TSTM WAS BUILDING IN FRONT OF US. WE REQUESTED FL330, WHICH WAS OUR OPTIMUM CRUISE ALT, ANYWAY. THE CTLR ADVISED US OF TFC AT FL310 NEAR JAN. WE ENTERED THE TOP OF THE TSTM AND IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED AN OFF COURSE VECTOR TO CLIMB TO FL330. WE WERE GIVEN A TURN TO 150 DEG AND CLRED TO FL330. THE CTLR WANTED US LEVEL IN 3 MIN. AT 32800' MSL THE ACFT WOULD NOT CLIMB ANY FURTHER NOR MAINTAIN THAT ALT, THEREFORE A VECTOR FOR DSCNT WAS REQUESTED AND OBTAINED. WE WERE CLRED TO FL310 AND THEN REQUESTED TO DSND TO FL290. THE CTLR WAS HEARD VECTORING THE OTHER ACFT AWAY TO PREVENT CONFLICT. FLT WAS RESUMED AT FL290 AND WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO JAN AND FLT PLAN ROUTE.
