Narrative:
While diverting around weather we were told to fly to a fix. We heard and typed in verni and proceeded. The fix ATC wanted was burni. Both are closely located. ATC corrected the fix and we proceeded to burni. No traffic or separation issues or safety issues were encountered.

Title: A pilot reported ATC clearance direct BURNI but the crew heard and entered VERNI in the FMC. VERNI is near MGW while BURNI is at the intersection of J61 and J64; 108 NM northeast.
Narrative: While diverting around weather we were told to fly to a fix. We heard and typed in VERNI and proceeded. The fix ATC wanted was BURNI. Both are closely located. ATC corrected the fix and we proceeded to BURNI. No traffic or separation issues or safety issues were encountered.
