Narrative:
After takeoff from runway 02 from cha with a clearance of runway heading and climb to 10000', we were handed over to cha departure control. Upon climbing through about 3000' MSL, we were given a left turn to the wnw and a climb clearance to 17000' MSL. This was heard by both pilots and acknowledged. Upon climbing through 10500' MSL the controller said, 'maintain 10000'.' we immediately began a descent back to 10000'. When we acknowledged, the controller said there was traffic at 11000'. No bearing nor range was given. We inquired about the climb to 17000' but no response was given. Within a few seconds we were given a frequency change to center. Upon checking in with center, we were acknowledged with a climb to 17000'. Remainder of flight was west/O incident.

UPON CLBING THROUGH ABOUT 3000' MSL, WE WERE GIVEN A LEFT TURN TO THE WNW AND A CLB CLRNC TO 17000' MSL. THIS WAS HEARD BY BOTH PLTS AND ACKNOWLEDGED. UPON CLBING THROUGH 10500' MSL THE CTLR SAID, 'MAINTAIN 10000'.' WE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A DSCNT BACK TO 10000'. WHEN WE ACKNOWLEDGED, THE CTLR SAID THERE WAS TFC AT 11000'. NO BEARING NOR RANGE WAS GIVEN. WE INQUIRED ABOUT THE CLB TO 17000' BUT NO RESPONSE WAS GIVEN. WITHIN A FEW SECS WE WERE GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE TO CENTER. UPON CHKING IN WITH CENTER, WE WERE ACKNOWLEDGED WITH A CLB TO 17000'. REMAINDER OF FLT WAS W/O INCIDENT.
