Narrative:
Contacting center on missed approach. From controller's, response, it was my impression we were cleared direct to the NDB. The controller was critical of the fact I was turning toward the NDB before reaching an altitude of 7000'. From the wording of his transmission, I did not understand there was an altitude requirement and confusion over heading before proceeding to the NDB. We discussed miscom. No evasive action was required. Aircraft noise, less than clear radio reception and normal departure cockpit activity. Better communication prior to approach or what you want us to do after approach.
