Narrative:
After having landed on runway 21 into hlg on a night visual approach we were instructed to back-taxi down runway 21 and turn left at the end. As we approached the end of the runway we turned left onto taxiway B. As we continued down the taxiway we queried the tower as to the taxi instructions. As we approached the runway; we queried the tower and asked if we were cleared onto runway 16/34. The tower instructed us to turn right followed by another right turn right onto D taxiway and proceed into the ramp. Prior to turning onto runway 16/34 we asked for specific clearance to turn right onto runway 16/34. Clearance was given and we complied with the instructions. We were not made aware of the event until we received a call from our company personnel. We made this error because of very dark conditions; poorly lighted airport markings; and a lack of local knowledge. I would suggest improved lighting at the airport location; familiarity of the airport; more thorough communications between tower and crew.

Title: After landing; a crew was cleared to back taxi on HLG Runway 21 and exit at the end; but because of poor lighting; fatigue; and unfamiliarity they exited at Taxiway B then entered Runway 16/34 before turning right onto Taxiway D.
