Narrative:

On descent into lax we were cleared civet profile descent. We were subsequently cleared to altitudes and speed not consistent with the profile descent. The speeds were faster, generally, then normal. The reclrnc to profile descent and then 25L ILS, with reclred restrictions, created some close altitude crossing restrictions. We ended up at baset intersection high and fast. The copilot was relatively new on the aircraft and relied too much on the VNAV capabilities of the autoplt, and this resulted in being 300-500' above the baset intersection altitude restriction. The aircraft should have been taken off the autoplt or used raw data information with vspd or flch mode with more aggressive inputs. This was eventually done in order to put the aircraft in the proper approach slot. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states the clearance for the ILS approach was given prior to reaching baset intersection, that is why he used it as a position reference. Most of the confusion had occurred when on the profile. Controller seemed confused about how to keep sep with VFR traffic avoiding TCA to the east. Reporter feels controller created some of the problem with frequent changes. Says 'it was awful.'

Title: ALT AND SPEED CHANGES AFTER ASSIGNING PROFILE DESCENT.

Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO LAX WE WERE CLRED CIVET PROFILE DSCNT. WE WERE SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED TO ALTS AND SPD NOT CONSISTENT WITH THE PROFILE DSCNT. THE SPDS WERE FASTER, GENERALLY, THEN NORMAL. THE RECLRNC TO PROFILE DSCNT AND THEN 25L ILS, WITH RECLRED RESTRICTIONS, CREATED SOME CLOSE ALT XING RESTRICTIONS. WE ENDED UP AT BASET INTXN HIGH AND FAST. THE COPLT WAS RELATIVELY NEW ON THE ACFT AND RELIED TOO MUCH ON THE VNAV CAPABILITIES OF THE AUTOPLT, AND THIS RESULTED IN BEING 300-500' ABOVE THE BASET INTXN ALT RESTRICTION. THE ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF THE AUTOPLT OR USED RAW DATA INFO WITH VSPD OR FLCH MODE WITH MORE AGGRESSIVE INPUTS. THIS WAS EVENTUALLY DONE IN ORDER TO PUT THE ACFT IN THE PROPER APCH SLOT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATES THE CLRNC FOR THE ILS APCH WAS GIVEN PRIOR TO REACHING BASET INTXN, THAT IS WHY HE USED IT AS A POS REF. MOST OF THE CONFUSION HAD OCCURRED WHEN ON THE PROFILE. CTLR SEEMED CONFUSED ABOUT HOW TO KEEP SEP WITH VFR TFC AVOIDING TCA TO THE E. RPTR FEELS CTLR CREATED SOME OF THE PROB WITH FREQUENT CHANGES. SAYS 'IT WAS AWFUL.'
