Narrative:
On climb out we were given clearance to FL290 and acknowledged the climb. Upon passing FL260 center advised us we were only cleared to FL250. I was fairly positive the controller had in fact initially given us FL290 and I advised him as such. He came back and asked if FL250 was our flight planned altitude and we concurred that was correct, but since forecast turbulence was not present, we had decided to accept his clearance to FL290. He then apologized and told us to continue up to FL290. I asked just for confirmation to state that his original clearance was to FL290, 'just for the record,' but he seemed reluctant to confirm or deny what was said, so we are not totally sure whether we heard correctly or not. However, FL290 was definitely our readback of the original clearance. There didn't seem to be a traffic conflict, as we were not advised of any.

Title: CLBING THROUGH FL260 REPORTER ACFT WAS ADVISED THAT CLRNC WAS TO FL250 ONLY. REPORTER BELIEVES CLRNC WAS ACTUALLY FL290.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO FL290 AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLB. UPON PASSING FL260 CENTER ADVISED US WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO FL250. I WAS FAIRLY POSITIVE THE CTLR HAD IN FACT INITIALLY GIVEN US FL290 AND I ADVISED HIM AS SUCH. HE CAME BACK AND ASKED IF FL250 WAS OUR FLT PLANNED ALT AND WE CONCURRED THAT WAS CORRECT, BUT SINCE FORECAST TURB WAS NOT PRESENT, WE HAD DECIDED TO ACCEPT HIS CLRNC TO FL290. HE THEN APOLOGIZED AND TOLD US TO CONTINUE UP TO FL290. I ASKED JUST FOR CONFIRMATION TO STATE THAT HIS ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS TO FL290, 'JUST FOR THE RECORD,' BUT HE SEEMED RELUCTANT TO CONFIRM OR DENY WHAT WAS SAID, SO WE ARE NOT TOTALLY SURE WHETHER WE HEARD CORRECTLY OR NOT. HOWEVER, FL290 WAS DEFINITELY OUR READBACK OF THE ORIGINAL CLRNC. THERE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE A TFC CONFLICT, AS WE WERE NOT ADVISED OF ANY.
