Narrative:
During cruise at FL410; the first officer noted high oil temperature on the left engine. The crew then noted zero oil quantity on same engine. High oil temperature checklist was performed. During procedure; oil temperature continued to increase and entered the red band; so the engine was shut down in accordance with the checklist and all indications returned to normal including oil quantity. The decision was made to [divert] as [another airport] was closer than [our destination] and the crew was familiar with airport and level of support available. Also; [our planned destination] had high winds at the surface which were not conducive to safe operation (280/27g39); mountainous terrain and high altitude above sea level.
