Narrative:
During climb out and passing FL200 the number 1 engine fuel 'filter bypass' light illuminated. I ran the checklist for the problem; and the first officer coordinated a return to land. We declared an emergency due to the possibility of fuel contamination. Landing was uneventful.

Title: B737-800 fuel 'Filter Bypass' annunciator light illuminated during climb out; the flight crew ran the checklist; declared an emergency and returned to their departure airport.
Narrative: During climb out and passing FL200 the Number 1 Engine fuel 'filter bypass' light illuminated. I ran the checklist for the problem; and the First Officer coordinated a return to land. We declared an emergency due to the possibility of fuel contamination. Landing was uneventful.
