Narrative:
As we approached the hold short line for the departure runway the raas went off simultaneously with tower evidently trying to communicate with us. Because we were unable to hear due to the raas; we asked for a repeat of whatever it was they had transmitted. With the raas having finally shut up and tower repeating itself; we discovered that we had been both cleared for takeoff and issued an initial departure heading.this event was caused by that well-known hazard to flight 'safety' item; the 'really awful advisory system'.

Title: Unexpected activation of RAAS system caused distraction of an air carrier flight crew during taxi resulting in a missed ATC transmission.
Narrative: As we approached the hold short line for the departure runway the RAAS went off simultaneously with Tower evidently trying to communicate with us. Because we were unable to hear due to the RAAS; we asked for a repeat of whatever it was they had transmitted.
