Narrative:
While approaching clt from southeast told to enter left base for runway 18L clear to land (no other traffic in the area at this time). When I selected 'gear down' I didn't get a green light, proceeded toward airport while working on the problem. I didn't tell tower I had a problem (mistake). After finishing pumping gear down and getting green gear light, I realized I was on short-short final for 23, saw no traffic and decided it was safer to land than go around and cross 18R. Informed tower what I had done. Tower supervisor said no problem, no violation. (No traffic.) reluctance to confess I had a problem. How long would it take to get back in the flow of traffic. I was the last of the 'flow' anyway. (No delay would have occurred.) I lined up on final for 23 3 mi out. Why tower didn't notice it and call it to my attention? (But I was the only traffic, they probably didn't watch me that closely.) would not have happened at a strange airport (I would have checked my heading more closely). I go into clt at least once a week.
