Narrative:
It was my responsibility to issue the airworthiness release on an aircraft following a scheduled 'a-20' check. The maintenance plan called for the 'a-20', and a check form was supplied with the work package. The work was accomplished in accordance with the package, the paperwork reviewed and the aircraft released. An apparent clerical error caused the issuance of the form for the 'a-21', instead of the one for the 'a-20'. This single digit change on the tally sheet number escaped my attention in the review of the paperwork package. My practice henceforth will be to confirm that issued forms correspond with the scheduled maintenance. The error was discovered by the records department and immediate action taken to effect the correct inspection. Supplemental information from acn 106372: it is our intention to form a production control group who will be specifically charged with the coordination and scheduling of all production work.

Title: BECAUSE OF AN ERROR IN PAPERWORK THE WRONG SERVICE CHECK WAS CONDUCTED BY MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL. ACFT WAS THEN RETURNED TO SERVICE AND RELEASED ILLEGALLY.

THE MAINT PLAN CALLED FOR THE 'A-20', AND A CHK FORM WAS SUPPLIED WITH THE WORK PACKAGE. THE WORK WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PACKAGE, THE PAPERWORK REVIEWED AND THE ACFT RELEASED. AN APPARENT CLERICAL ERROR CAUSED THE ISSUANCE OF THE FORM FOR THE 'A-21', INSTEAD OF THE ONE FOR THE 'A-20'. THIS SINGLE DIGIT CHANGE ON THE TALLY SHEET NUMBER ESCAPED MY ATTN IN THE REVIEW OF THE PAPERWORK PACKAGE. MY PRACTICE HENCEFORTH WILL BE TO CONFIRM THAT ISSUED FORMS CORRESPOND WITH THE SCHEDULED MAINT. THE ERROR WAS DISCOVERED BY THE RECORDS DEPT AND IMMEDIATE ACTION TAKEN TO EFFECT THE CORRECT INSPECTION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 106372: IT IS OUR INTENTION TO FORM A PRODUCTION CONTROL GROUP WHO WILL BE SPECIFICALLY CHARGED WITH THE COORD AND SCHEDULING OF ALL PRODUCTION WORK.
