Narrative:
I requested and received a ferry permit to ferry 2 shorts aircraft to maintenance. In my attempt to meet maintenance time commitments; I neglected to get a mechanic to sign the ferry permits. While reviewing my error; I also discovered that one of the open airworthiness directives on the aircraft did not allow a ferry flight to take place. I immediately grounded the aircraft until I researcher whether or not I was indeed in violation of the far's. Some airworthiness directives allow for flight to a maintenance facility and I didn't readily recognize the fact that one of them didn't. The fix for this for me at least was to hire a mechanic to be integrally involved in the maintenance of the aircraft and to read the FAA advisory circular on obtaining a ferry permit. I will never again ferry an airplane without re-reading and following the approved procedures. I also have purchased an electronic record keeping system that will allow me to better monitor airworthiness directive's service bulletins and FAA advisory.
