Narrative:
After takeoff we got a cabin door unlocked light in the cockpit. I called the F/a and told her to take a seat and strap herself in. We then returned to the alb airport, made a normal landing and went to our gate. I checked the door and found that it was closed ok. I then opened it and closed it. The light in the cockpit went out and was working normally. I then determined that the light gave us a temporary false signal and was now working normally. I notified our dispatch and continued on. There was not any further trouble with the light. Later my chief pilot told me that I should have recorded the malfunction in the log book and have maintenance check it. The flight crew was not aware that a temporary malfunctioning ann light requires maintenance action. Our ground schools spend most of their time on aircraft systems and very little on regulations. I feel that we should have been aware of these requirements.

Title: FLT RETURNED TO DEP ARPT IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF BECAUSE OF ILLUMINATION OF THE CABIN DOOR UNLOCK LIGHT.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF WE GOT A CABIN DOOR UNLOCKED LIGHT IN THE COCKPIT. I CALLED THE F/A AND TOLD HER TO TAKE A SEAT AND STRAP HERSELF IN. WE THEN RETURNED TO THE ALB ARPT, MADE A NORMAL LNDG AND WENT TO OUR GATE. I CHKED THE DOOR AND FOUND THAT IT WAS CLOSED OK. LATER MY CHIEF PLT TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD HAVE RECORDED THE MALFUNCTION IN THE LOG BOOK AND HAVE MAINT CHK IT. THE FLT CREW WAS NOT AWARE THAT A TEMPORARY MALFUNCTIONING ANN LIGHT REQUIRES MAINT ACTION. OUR GND SCHOOLS SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME ON ACFT SYSTEMS AND VERY LITTLE ON REGS. I FEEL THAT WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THESE REQUIREMENTS.
