Narrative:

We were approximately 29 mi west of houston at 10000' and 250 KTS on the houston lisse 2 arrival. WX was cavu. At that point I saw the exhaust smoke from a jet that was at 12 O'clock slightly below our altitude in a shallow climb closing rapidly on a head-on collision course. I immediately threw the plane into a right bank slightly nose low, and about 3 seconds later the jet passed about 50-100' off our left side and about 20' above us. The approach controller working us was not working or even painting the fgt, but it was thought that he might have been part of an air show occurring at nearby hull field. Thank goodness for the fgt's dirty engines. West/O that additional clue we may never have been able to avert disaster.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-MLG FGT NEAR IAH DURING SPECIAL INTEREST ACTIVITY AIR SHOW.

Narrative: WE WERE APPROX 29 MI W OF HOUSTON AT 10000' AND 250 KTS ON THE HOUSTON LISSE 2 ARR. WX WAS CAVU. AT THAT POINT I SAW THE EXHAUST SMOKE FROM A JET THAT WAS AT 12 O'CLOCK SLIGHTLY BELOW OUR ALT IN A SHALLOW CLB CLOSING RAPIDLY ON A HEAD-ON COLLISION COURSE. I IMMEDIATELY THREW THE PLANE INTO A RIGHT BANK SLIGHTLY NOSE LOW, AND ABOUT 3 SECS LATER THE JET PASSED ABOUT 50-100' OFF OUR LEFT SIDE AND ABOUT 20' ABOVE US. THE APCH CTLR WORKING US WAS NOT WORKING OR EVEN PAINTING THE FGT, BUT IT WAS THOUGHT THAT HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN PART OF AN AIR SHOW OCCURRING AT NEARBY HULL FIELD. THANK GOODNESS FOR THE FGT'S DIRTY ENGS. W/O THAT ADDITIONAL CLUE WE MAY NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO AVERT DISASTER.
