Narrative:
We were cleared for takeoff on runway 9 and had completed the before takeoff checklist. When the captain said 'set thrust' I noticed--and announced--that the left engine parameters were not normal. We informed the tower we were aborting on the runway and they asked if we required assistance; which we did not. We requested taxi clearance to the gate and returned without incident.I am unable to explain why the engine parameters were not normal. I had started the number 1 engine on the taxi out and observed initial normal start indications. I heard the click associated with a normal start and I observed the cyan 'T' on the N1 gauge and the red line on the itt gauge jumping to their normal positions post start. While I was waiting for the engine to stabilize I was distracted by having to request a taxi clearance clarification as I was unclear as to where we were instructed to hold short. This may have contributed to my not verifying normal stabilized start parameters as we never even got to the hold short position and were subsequently cleared for takeoff.
