Narrative:
During the descent we missed a clearance to descend 'via' the arrival. We had been receiving descents in manner not what we were accustomed to on this arrival. We did not think that anything was amiss until ATC queried us as to our altitude. We were vectored away from the arrival; descended; and resumed the arrival without incident. The night before my sleep period was interrupted at midnight due to a party in the room next door. Phone calls were made and the noise subsided. Sleep was difficult to obtain after that. Wake up was at 5 a.m. The next morning. There was some confusion during ATC's query that I now recognize as coming from fatigue. I might have; at that time; been flying in a mental fog.
