Lost hydraulic a system down to 12%. Called dispatch and maintenance control. In holding for our destination when we started loosing more hydraulic fluid. Declared emergency and landed at a nearby divert airport. [Kept] dispatch; maintenance; flight attendants; passengers all in the loop. Landed normally. Stopped on runway for fire trucks to look us over and taxied into gate.
