Narrative:
Our route of flight was dtw aco air J34 bucko esl iad FL330. After passing air VOR, cle ARTCC cleared us 'pilot discretion to FL310, cross 25 northwest esl at FL250'. I was in the process of finishing my crew meal at the time. The first officer tuned in esl VOR for the dogleg and said we had plenty of time. The DME showed 147 NM. By the time I stopped thinking that ARTCC gave us an early clearance, the first officer's DME broke lock and then locked on at 33 DME. We knew we couldn't make the crossing restriction, so we asked ARTCC for altitude relief. They turned us to a heading of 060 until we reached FL250, then direct esl VOR. At first we thought the first officer's DME hundredths digit stuck on '1' when it initially locked on to esl VOR. 2 hours later, we flew flight cle/iad. Passing air VOR, the first officer tuned in esl VOR and again got a DME of 100+ NM. I listened to the identification signal. The VOR signal was from esl VOR, but the DME signal was from eri VOR (erie, PA). I consequently reported the incident to our flight office so they could discuss the NAVAID problem with ARTCC.

Title: ERI VOR 110 PT 8 CHANNEL 45 AND ESL VOR 110 PT 8 CHANNEL 45 APPROX 200 MILES SEPARATION. APPROXIMATELY MIDWAY BETWEEN THE TWO, FLT CREW, ON TWO FLTS, RECEIVED ERRONEOUS DME.
Narrative: OUR ROUTE OF FLT WAS DTW ACO AIR J34 BUCKO ESL IAD FL330. AFTER PASSING AIR VOR, CLE ARTCC CLRED US 'PLT DISCRETION TO FL310, CROSS 25 NW ESL AT FL250'. I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF FINISHING MY CREW MEAL AT THE TIME. THE F/O TUNED IN ESL VOR FOR THE DOGLEG AND SAID WE HAD PLENTY OF TIME. THE DME SHOWED 147 NM. BY THE TIME I STOPPED THINKING THAT ARTCC GAVE US AN EARLY CLRNC, THE F/O'S DME BROKE LOCK AND THEN LOCKED ON AT 33 DME. WE KNEW WE COULDN'T MAKE THE XING RESTRICTION, SO WE ASKED ARTCC FOR ALT RELIEF. THEY TURNED US TO A HDG OF 060 UNTIL WE REACHED FL250, THEN DIRECT ESL VOR. AT FIRST WE THOUGHT THE F/O'S DME HUNDREDTHS DIGIT STUCK ON '1' WHEN IT INITIALLY LOCKED ON TO ESL VOR. 2 HRS LATER, WE FLEW FLT CLE/IAD. PASSING AIR VOR, THE F/O TUNED IN ESL VOR AND AGAIN GOT A DME OF 100+ NM. I LISTENED TO THE IDENTIFICATION SIGNAL. THE VOR SIGNAL WAS FROM ESL VOR, BUT THE DME SIGNAL WAS FROM ERI VOR (ERIE, PA). I CONSEQUENTLY REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO OUR FLT OFFICE SO THEY COULD DISCUSS THE NAVAID PROBLEM WITH ARTCC.
