Narrative:
Climbing through FL180 sat departure control reported a takeoff sighting of smoke from our #3 engine. All engine gauges were normal with oil qty showing 2.1 gals. #3 was throttled to idle and our cruise altitude refiled to FL230. The F/a's were briefed concerning a possible precautionary shutdown. Maintenance and flight controls were notified of the possible shutdown and desire to land at dfw. The oil qty continued to drop slowly and at 1.0 gals the engine was shutdown per all checklists. (The loss rate accelerated just before shutdown checklist.) a lower altitude was requested and an emergency declared. The remainder of the flight was conducted at 13000' and we were cleared directly to dfw. Ft worth center and dfw afforded us all the services and courtesies reserved for those in-extremis. My complements to whomever saw the engine problem on takeoff and to sat departure control for getting the information to us. Their actions made a possibly frozen engine a precautionary shutdown.

Title: FLT CREW OF LGT WAS ADVISED BY DEP TRACON #3 ENGINE EMITTING SMOKE ON TKOF. SLOW DEPLETION OF OIL QUANTITY ENROUTE CAUSED FLT CREW TO PERFORM A PRECAUTIONARY ENGINE SHUTDOWN.
Narrative: CLBING THROUGH FL180 SAT DEP CTL RPTED A TKOF SIGHTING OF SMOKE FROM OUR #3 ENG. ALL ENG GAUGES WERE NORMAL WITH OIL QTY SHOWING 2.1 GALS. #3 WAS THROTTLED TO IDLE AND OUR CRUISE ALT REFILED TO FL230. THE F/A'S WERE BRIEFED CONCERNING A POSSIBLE PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN. MAINT AND FLT CTLS WERE NOTIFIED OF THE POSSIBLE SHUTDOWN AND DESIRE TO LAND AT DFW. THE OIL QTY CONTINUED TO DROP SLOWLY AND AT 1.0 GALS THE ENG WAS SHUTDOWN PER ALL CHKLISTS. (THE LOSS RATE ACCELERATED JUST BEFORE SHUTDOWN CHKLIST.) A LOWER ALT WAS REQUESTED AND AN EMER DECLARED. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS CONDUCTED AT 13000' AND WE WERE CLRED DIRECTLY TO DFW. FT WORTH CENTER AND DFW AFFORDED US ALL THE SVCS AND COURTESIES RESERVED FOR THOSE IN-EXTREMIS. MY COMPLEMENTS TO WHOMEVER SAW THE ENG PROB ON TKOF AND TO SAT DEP CTL FOR GETTING THE INFO TO US. THEIR ACTIONS MADE A POSSIBLY FROZEN ENG A PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN.
