Narrative:

Local thunderstorm and reported 'severe' turbulence was in area. ATC was intent upon traffic sequencing west/O regard to conditions. Cmh approach assigned headings and altitudes destined to result in trw penetration. We offered to proceed VFR to airport (insight), but were denied. Requested heading and altitude changes, but were denied. On the verge of declaring an emergency, we informed approach we were deviating. The next moment a new controller was evident on frequency. The new controller acknowledged our 'operational need' to deviate and 'approved deviation as required.' it should be noted that air traffic controllers need to listen as well as talk.
