Narrative:
I was on a VFR flight from punta gorda to avon park to sarasota with a student on a training x-country. I was working the radio with tpa approach and was handed off to sarasota tower (approach was very busy). I was flying heading of 240 degrees and just a little south of the airport. I was told to report a right base. I turned to a heading of 270 degrees. I was then instructed to swing it wide and follow an small transport jet. I turned back to a heading of 240 degrees and was looking for the jet. As I was approaching the extended center runway line, I called tower back and reported a right base, negative on the jet. He said he wanted me on a heading of 140 degrees. As I began to turn to that heading the jet passed below at about my 7-9 O'clock position. I then turned and followed him on in. I guess I just missed his call to turn to the heading of 140 degrees.
