Narrative:
En route ord-sea, 5/X/89, descended to 10000' MSL for approach to sea. Under radar vectors of sea approach control on top of broken layer at 10000', heading 240 degrees. ATC reported traffic at our 12 O'clock position 9200' climbing and instructed us to turn right 20 degrees (260 degrees). ATC then reported aircraft was turning towards us and ordered a turn to 290 degrees. Immediately thereafter, ATC ordered us to climb and we initiated an immediate climb to 10700' at which time we spotted said traffic, an small aircraft, passed below and to our left. Estimate said small aircraft was 1/4-1/2 mi away, 500' below us. We were reclred to maintain 10000' and landed at sea. Good traffic handling by sea averted what could have been a much closer conflict in this case. Outstanding cooperation from sea ATC.

Title: WDB ISSUED TURNS AND CLIMB TO AVOID CONFLICTION WITH AN UNCONTROLLED SMA.
Narrative: ENRTE ORD-SEA, 5/X/89, DSNDED TO 10000' MSL FOR APCH TO SEA. UNDER RADAR VECTORS OF SEA APCH CTL ON TOP OF BROKEN LAYER AT 10000', HDG 240 DEGS. ATC RPTED TFC AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS 9200' CLBING AND INSTRUCTED US TO TURN RIGHT 20 DEGS (260 DEGS). ATC THEN RPTED ACFT WAS TURNING TOWARDS US AND ORDERED A TURN TO 290 DEGS. IMMEDIATELY THEREAFTER, ATC ORDERED US TO CLB AND WE INITIATED AN IMMEDIATE CLB TO 10700' AT WHICH TIME WE SPOTTED SAID TFC, AN SMA, PASSED BELOW AND TO OUR LEFT. ESTIMATE SAID SMA WAS 1/4-1/2 MI AWAY, 500' BELOW US. WE WERE RECLRED TO MAINTAIN 10000' AND LANDED AT SEA. GOOD TFC HANDLING BY SEA AVERTED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH CLOSER CONFLICT IN THIS CASE. OUTSTANDING COOPERATION FROM SEA ATC.
