Narrative:
While operating in VNAV, mode control panel speed window 'shuttered' (not restr). Lax center told us that normal speed could be maintained after FL180. As we were on a loop departure, daggett transition, past the lax VOR on climbout, about 13,000', we were accelerating to near normal climb speed. I do not recall hearing the speed restriction given to us. Evidently we were told that we should maintain 250 KTS until further advised. We slowed to 260 as we traded airspeed for altitude until passing FL180 and resumed a normal climb schedule.

Title: FLT DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED AIRSPEED IN CLIMB.
Narrative: WHILE OPERATING IN VNAV, MODE CTL PANEL SPEED WINDOW 'SHUTTERED' (NOT RESTR). LAX CENTER TOLD US THAT NORMAL SPEED COULD BE MAINTAINED AFTER FL180. AS WE WERE ON A LOOP DEP, DAGGETT TRANSITION, PAST THE LAX VOR ON CLIMBOUT, ABOUT 13,000', WE WERE ACCELERATING TO NEAR NORMAL CLIMB SPEED. I DO NOT RECALL HEARING THE SPEED RESTRICTION GIVEN TO US. EVIDENTLY WE WERE TOLD THAT WE SHOULD MAINTAIN 250 KTS UNTIL FURTHER ADVISED. WE SLOWED TO 260 AS WE TRADED AIRSPEED FOR ALT UNTIL PASSING FL180 AND RESUMED A NORMAL CLIMB SCHEDULE.
