Narrative:
Dual cross-country training flight planned to stay below restr area R4006. Once clear of restr arsa, had planned to climb to 4500' MSL to cross bay safely. Student misread chart believing himself to be clear of restr area and suggested climb to 4500'. Instrument glanced at chart on student's lap and authorized climb. Closer reading of chart at 4100' MSL by instrument indicated that aircraft still about 5 mi from R4006 border. Instrument closed throttle and aircraft descended clear immediately. Do not believe that area was hot at time (weekend afternoon) but do not know. At a glance, cambridge and salisbury appear same on chart. If cambridge is mistaken as salisbury as apparently both student and instrument did, then one would conclude that aircraft still in restr area was clear of it. Because this route is an far 141 approved school route used frequently on cross-country training, a deidented version of this report will be provided to school safety officer to help others avoid making the same mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INSTRUCTOR AND TRAINEE ON CROSS-COUNTRY TRAINING FLT INADVERTENTLY CLIMBED INTO RESTRICTED AREA. ERROR WAS CAUGHT BY INSTRUCTOR AND ACFT WAS DESCENDED BELOW THE RESTRICTED AREA UNTIL CLEAR.
Narrative: DUAL CROSS-COUNTRY TRNING FLT PLANNED TO STAY BELOW RESTR AREA R4006. ONCE CLR OF RESTR ARSA, HAD PLANNED TO CLB TO 4500' MSL TO CROSS BAY SAFELY. STUDENT MISREAD CHART BELIEVING HIMSELF TO BE CLR OF RESTR AREA AND SUGGESTED CLB TO 4500'. INSTR GLANCED AT CHART ON STUDENT'S LAP AND AUTHORIZED CLB. CLOSER READING OF CHART AT 4100' MSL BY INSTR INDICATED THAT ACFT STILL ABOUT 5 MI FROM R4006 BORDER. INSTR CLOSED THROTTLE AND ACFT DSNDED CLR IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT AREA WAS HOT AT TIME (WEEKEND AFTERNOON) BUT DO NOT KNOW. AT A GLANCE, CAMBRIDGE AND SALISBURY APPEAR SAME ON CHART. IF CAMBRIDGE IS MISTAKEN AS SALISBURY AS APPARENTLY BOTH STUDENT AND INSTR DID, THEN ONE WOULD CONCLUDE THAT ACFT STILL IN RESTR AREA WAS CLR OF IT. BECAUSE THIS ROUTE IS AN FAR 141 APPROVED SCHOOL ROUTE USED FREQUENTLY ON CROSS-COUNTRY TRNING, A DEIDENTED VERSION OF THIS RPT WILL BE PROVIDED TO SCHOOL SAFETY OFFICER TO HELP OTHERS AVOID MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE.
