Narrative:

In 5/89 after a long and traumatic day of negotiating the sale of my practice, my FBO called saying he could put my floats on if I could get the plane there by XA30 pm. I knew I was tired but since it was only a 5 mi hop from mri to anc, and lake hood, I felt it was safe. I called mri ground and told them I was transitioning from mri to anc. In the past they have always gotten my clearance for me. This time they told me I was cleared for a departure from the crosswind leg after takeoff on 24. After takeoff I was approved for a frequency change. I immediately switched to 118.3, the lower frequency at anc. There was interference on my radio and I heard no reply. I called repeatedly and finally got an answer when I was near the ball field. The controller started to question me on why I hadn't called approach control and had begun a lecture when my engine quit. I saw lake hood strip to my left with no aircraft on it nor any I could see on approach. I interrupted the controller to tell him my engine quit and I was going into the strip. Since I wanted to concentrate on the landing, I asked him to call lake hood for me. I accomplished the landing west/O difficulty and once on the strip and undistracted by radio talk, I simply turned the fuel switch to the other tank and taxied to have the floats put on.

Title: GA SMA FUEL EXHAUSTION ON SHORT FRY FLT. LANDED AT DESTINATION, CHANGED TANKS AND TAXIED TO FBO.

Narrative: IN 5/89 AFTER A LONG AND TRAUMATIC DAY OF NEGOTIATING THE SALE OF MY PRACTICE, MY FBO CALLED SAYING HE COULD PUT MY FLOATS ON IF I COULD GET THE PLANE THERE BY XA30 PM. I KNEW I WAS TIRED BUT SINCE IT WAS ONLY A 5 MI HOP FROM MRI TO ANC, AND LAKE HOOD, I FELT IT WAS SAFE. I CALLED MRI GND AND TOLD THEM I WAS TRANSITIONING FROM MRI TO ANC. IN THE PAST THEY HAVE ALWAYS GOTTEN MY CLRNC FOR ME. THIS TIME THEY TOLD ME I WAS CLRED FOR A DEP FROM THE XWIND LEG AFTER TKOF ON 24. AFTER TKOF I WAS APPROVED FOR A FREQ CHANGE. I IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED TO 118.3, THE LOWER FREQ AT ANC. THERE WAS INTERFERENCE ON MY RADIO AND I HEARD NO REPLY. I CALLED REPEATEDLY AND FINALLY GOT AN ANSWER WHEN I WAS NEAR THE BALL FIELD. THE CTLR STARTED TO QUESTION ME ON WHY I HADN'T CALLED APCH CTL AND HAD BEGUN A LECTURE WHEN MY ENG QUIT. I SAW LAKE HOOD STRIP TO MY LEFT WITH NO ACFT ON IT NOR ANY I COULD SEE ON APCH. I INTERRUPTED THE CTLR TO TELL HIM MY ENG QUIT AND I WAS GOING INTO THE STRIP. SINCE I WANTED TO CONCENTRATE ON THE LNDG, I ASKED HIM TO CALL LAKE HOOD FOR ME. I ACCOMPLISHED THE LNDG W/O DIFFICULTY AND ONCE ON THE STRIP AND UNDISTRACTED BY RADIO TALK, I SIMPLY TURNED THE FUEL SWITCH TO THE OTHER TANK AND TAXIED TO HAVE THE FLOATS PUT ON.
