Narrative:

I was told by the tower to 'taxi into position and hold'. I requested to back taxi on runway 32 because I try to make full length departures whenever practical. My request was approved so we back taxied to the beginning of the runway, lined up in position and took off. Another aircraft was departing on runway 27 which is an intersecting runway. The aircraft made an immediate right turn to avoid us, but I was so removed from the radio communication that I didn't know what was going on until the tower questioned us about taking off without a clearance. I didn't know what the controller was talking about until I thought about it then I realized what I had done. I was so much into instructing that even though I heard the radio I wasn't listening. I tuned out the radio. Aviate, navigate, and communicate. From now on I am going to listen more carefully and think about what my instructions were. There is more to it than just reading back instructions to the controller. Listen and think! And if you're not sure about an instruction, clearance, etc, ask!
