Narrative:
We departed jfk and were climbing towards greki intersection, the first officer was flying. Position was 30 mi southwest of carmel VOR when the incident occurred. The controller called traffic at 10 O'clock 10-12 mi, I'm not sure of range. I saw strobes for a moment but lost them. Approaching 10,500' controller ordered level off and we maintained 10,500'. I believe the controller's last traffic call was 10 O'clock at 2 mi. I picked up the traffic about 11 O'clock almost level, it looked like we would be very close to the traffic so I took the aircraft and started a left turn and traffic started to track across our nose. I estimate traffic passed level 12 O'clock and less than 1/2 mi. The conflict aircraft was VFR with radar flight following. Better coordination between controllers would have prevented this incident. Supplemental information from acn 112420: I received a handoff and was talking to air carrier widebody transport in jfk departure's airspace. I observed a tracked VFR aircraft on a converging course with air carrier widebody transport and took action to avoid a conflict.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-WDB GA-UNK FLYING VFR NE OF JFK.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED JFK AND WERE CLBING TOWARDS GREKI INTXN, THE F/O WAS FLYING. POSITION WAS 30 MI SW OF CARMEL VOR WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE CTLR CALLED TFC AT 10 O'CLOCK 10-12 MI, I'M NOT SURE OF RANGE. I SAW STROBES FOR A MOMENT BUT LOST THEM. APCHING 10,500' CTLR ORDERED LEVEL OFF AND WE MAINTAINED 10,500'. I BELIEVE THE CTLR'S LAST TFC CALL WAS 10 O'CLOCK AT 2 MI. I PICKED UP THE TFC ABOUT 11 O'CLOCK ALMOST LEVEL, IT LOOKED LIKE WE WOULD BE VERY CLOSE TO THE TFC SO I TOOK THE ACFT AND STARTED A LEFT TURN AND TFC STARTED TO TRACK ACROSS OUR NOSE. I ESTIMATE TFC PASSED LEVEL 12 O'CLOCK AND LESS THAN 1/2 MI. THE CONFLICT ACFT WAS VFR WITH RADAR FLT FOLLOWING. BETTER COORD BETWEEN CTLRS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 112420: I RECEIVED A HANDOFF AND WAS TALKING TO ACR WDB IN JFK DEP'S AIRSPACE. I OBSERVED A TRACKED VFR ACFT ON A CONVERGING COURSE WITH ACR WDB AND TOOK ACTION TO AVOID A CONFLICT.
