Narrative:

*Low time CFI was assigned to give a lot time aircraft owner a bi-annual flight review. Owner had only flown 5 hours in the past 10 yrs with a total time of 250 hours. CFI had 347 hours. CFI decided to take this short x-country in lieu of a longer one as the 'weather wasn't good enough' for the long one. The short one was 25 mi to an airport that was to be navigated to by following a highway in marginal VFR conditions. Since student was more familiar with the area the CFI let the student do the flying and the navigation work while he watched for traffic and attempted to check out certain aircraft equipment that the sales department wanted him to check on. The student took the wrong highway and they, in limited visibility, finally approached a large city, boston. A quick 180 was done to get out of the TCA and try to find stow, ma. CFI states that he was not familiar with the area on that route.
