Narrative:
On jun/thu/89 I was assigned aircraft for a flight from springfield to rockford for state of il business to ron and return to springfield on jun/fri/89. A check of the maintenance clipboard and the schedule board showed the aircraft to be 'green tagged' as airworthy for flight from a maintenance standpoint. The flight was routine, other than an en route IFR flight plan was necessitated due to IMC conditions that did not improve as forecast. I did not become aware of the fact that the aircraft was out of annual until the morning of jun/xx/89 when I received a call from our maintenance department informing me of a 'mixup'. I obtained a ferry permit and an a&P check of the aircraft and conducted a routine VFR flight back to springfield the evening of jun/xx/89. I realize that determining the airworthiness of an aircraft is the responsibility of the PIC. In the future I will personally check maintenance records on aircraft I am assigned to fly, and not put 'blind faith' in a maintenance department.
