Narrative:
I was PIC of medium large transport, on a regularly scheduled cargo mission into and out of wright-patterson AFB. The trip was approximately 3 hours behind schedule because of adverse WX (thunderstorms) at the preceding departure point, tinker AFB. Upon completion of cargo loading operations, engines were started and taxi clearance was requested. Patterson ground control directed us to taxi to runway 23R. While taxiing and accomplishing before takeoff checklists, ground control directed us to contact tower 'when ready for takeoff'. The radio frequency was changed, and while continuing to taxi, patterson tower directed us to 'hold short of 23L'. Our position at that time was approximately at '1' on the diagram, and the instruction was acknowledged. Thinking 23R instead of 23L, I continued taxiing while completing checklists. Simultaneous transmissions from tower and a light twin on final to 23L quickly alerted us that I had transgressed into the 23L approach landing zone. I continued across, the light twin made a go around, and I acknowledged my error on the radio. On reflection: 1) another case of hearing what I wanted/expected to hear (hold short of 23R) and not listening to what was said, hold short of 23L. 2) ground control must have been aware of the landing aircraft and could have alerted us when issuing our original taxi instructions, or when directing the frequency change. The parallel runway confign is a bit unusual at ffo in that the taxiway goes around the end of 23L instead of directly across it. 4) normal schedule times for this mission result in our aircraft operating in the area at that early morning hour. Consequently, traffic on 23L is virtually non-existent, thus leading to a false sense of security.

Title: ON TAXI FOR TKOF CROSSED JUST OUTSIDE APCH END OF ACTIVE RWY AFTER INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: I WAS PIC OF MLG, ON A REGULARLY SCHEDULED CARGO MISSION INTO AND OUT OF WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB. THE TRIP WAS APPROX 3 HRS BEHIND SCHEDULE BECAUSE OF ADVERSE WX (TSTMS) AT THE PRECEDING DEP POINT, TINKER AFB. UPON COMPLETION OF CARGO LOADING OPERATIONS, ENGINES WERE STARTED AND TAXI CLRNC WAS REQUESTED. PATTERSON GND CTL DIRECTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 23R. WHILE TAXIING AND ACCOMPLISHING BEFORE TKOF CHECKLISTS, GND CTL DIRECTED US TO CONTACT TWR 'WHEN READY FOR TKOF'. THE RADIO FREQ WAS CHANGED, AND WHILE CONTINUING TO TAXI, PATTERSON TWR DIRECTED US TO 'HOLD SHORT OF 23L'. OUR POSITION AT THAT TIME WAS APPROX AT '1' ON THE DIAGRAM, AND THE INSTRUCTION WAS ACKNOWLEDGED. THINKING 23R INSTEAD OF 23L, I CONTINUED TAXIING WHILE COMPLETING CHECKLISTS. SIMULTANEOUS TRANSMISSIONS FROM TWR AND A LIGHT TWIN ON FINAL TO 23L QUICKLY ALERTED US THAT I HAD TRANSGRESSED INTO THE 23L APCH LNDG ZONE. 2) GND CTL MUST HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THE LNDG ACFT AND COULD HAVE ALERTED US WHEN ISSUING OUR ORIGINAL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS, OR WHEN DIRECTING THE FREQ CHANGE. THE PARALLEL RWY CONFIGN IS A BIT UNUSUAL AT FFO IN THAT THE TXWY GOES AROUND THE END OF 23L INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY ACROSS IT. 4) NORMAL SCHEDULE TIMES FOR THIS MISSION RESULT IN OUR ACFT OPERATING IN THE AREA AT THAT EARLY MORNING HOUR. CONSEQUENTLY, TFC ON 23L IS VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT, THUS LEADING TO A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.
