Narrative:
At FL390 while diverting around thunderstorms, experienced severe turbulence in cirrus clouds. Unable to maintain altitude (aircraft climbed then descended). We reported out of FL390 descending and were recleared to FL370. Turbulence lasted only about 30 seconds.

Title: ACR ACFT HAS UPSET DUE TO HIGH ALT AND TURBULENCE INDUCED BY AREA OF TSTMS. EMERGENCY CHANGE OF ALT WITHOUT INITIAL ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: AT FL390 WHILE DIVERTING AROUND TSTMS, EXPERIENCED SEVERE TURB IN CIRRUS CLOUDS. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT (ACFT CLIMBED THEN DESCENDED). WE REPORTED OUT OF FL390 DESCENDING AND WERE RECLEARED TO FL370. TURB LASTED ONLY ABOUT 30 SECONDS.
