Narrative:
Departed oakland for photo flight over berkeley. Asked tower for frequency change to bay (approach) - was 1500', tower advised me to contact alameda tower for the altitudes I was to operate in even though I was just outside their airspace. I received no 'radar service terminated' or 'squawk 1200'. I called alameda and they had me on radar, so I figured there had been a handoff. Alameda tower advised me to let them know when I was ready to return. I turned back for oakland airport and advised alameda tower. They gave me 'frequency change approved'. Since I was at 1450' MSL and under the outer core of the arsa, I gave oakland tower a call. They seemed a bit surprised to hear from me there, but I did have 2-WAY communication so I began T climb (sebnd) into the outer core of the arsa (I was almost at the inner core). At that time tower advised me to stay clear of the inner corner when they figured out I had not talked to bay, then gave me a squawk etc and everything was fine. I probably should have stayed in alameda air traffic area (below 1500') as I was accustomed to doing several years ago. When I used to go through their air traffic area back to oakland all the time, I would always call oakland tower directly, not approach control, so I went into the arsa when I guess I wasn't supposed to.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT INADVERTENTLY ENTERS OAKLAND ARSA.
Narrative: DEPARTED OAKLAND FOR PHOTO FLT OVER BERKELEY. ASKED TWR FOR FREQ CHANGE TO BAY (APCH) - WAS 1500', TWR ADVISED ME TO CONTACT ALAMEDA TWR FOR THE ALTS I WAS TO OPERATE IN EVEN THOUGH I WAS JUST OUTSIDE THEIR AIRSPACE. I RECEIVED NO 'RADAR SERVICE TERMINATED' OR 'SQUAWK 1200'. I CALLED ALAMEDA AND THEY HAD ME ON RADAR, SO I FIGURED THERE HAD BEEN A HANDOFF. ALAMEDA TWR ADVISED ME TO LET THEM KNOW WHEN I WAS READY TO RETURN. I TURNED BACK FOR OAKLAND ARPT AND ADVISED ALAMEDA TWR. THEY GAVE ME 'FREQ CHANGE APPROVED'. SINCE I WAS AT 1450' MSL AND UNDER THE OUTER CORE OF THE ARSA, I GAVE OAKLAND TWR A CALL. THEY SEEMED A BIT SURPRISED TO HEAR FROM ME THERE, BUT I DID HAVE 2-WAY COM SO I BEGAN T CLIMB (SEBND) INTO THE OUTER CORE OF THE ARSA (I WAS ALMOST AT THE INNER CORE). AT THAT TIME TWR ADVISED ME TO STAY CLEAR OF THE INNER CORNER WHEN THEY FIGURED OUT I HAD NOT TALKED TO BAY, THEN GAVE ME A SQUAWK ETC AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN ALAMEDA ATA (BELOW 1500') AS I WAS ACCUSTOMED TO DOING SEVERAL YEARS AGO. WHEN I USED TO GO THROUGH THEIR ATA BACK TO OAKLAND ALL THE TIME, I WOULD ALWAYS CALL OAKLAND TWR DIRECTLY, NOT APCH CTL, SO I WENT INTO THE ARSA WHEN I GUESS I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO.
